Literacy


Our hope for our students in Literacy:

To be successfully literate, students need to master three key areas of Reading and Writing: learning the code, making meaning, and thinking critically.

Aim in Literacy

  • Understand – the big ideas and themes that students develop understanding of over the phases
  • Know – the meaningful and important content, concepts, and topics at each phase that enrich students’ understanding of the big ideas and themes and that students study using the practices
  • Do – the practices (skills, strategies, and processes) that bring rigour to learning and support the development of the key competencies.

Classroom Practice for Our Teachers

  • Aligning to the phases from the NZ English Curriculum.
  • Using the iDeaL framework for Structured Literacy in Spelling and Reading
  • Use the iDeaL Reading and Spelling planning and to ensure concept coverage
  • Are responsible for the storage of classroom equipment and resources
  • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities
  • Plan collaboratively during team meetings to share ideas, resources, activities and successes
  • Following best practice models, implement assessment guides to group and support learning
  • Using decodables to support letter development and spelling concepts
  • Using iDeaL spelling words for home learning
  • Plan and prepare appropriate learning programmes, where we share Learning Intentions and Success Criteria

At Glenbervie School, we understand that Literacy is the key to unlocking all other areas of learning, and we are committed to providing explicit, systematic, and engaging instruction. We are passionate about fostering a love of language and stories. Our Literacy programme empowers students not only to read and write proficiently but also to think critically, express themselves clearly, and become lifelong learners who can confidently navigate the world of words.
