Tēna koutou katoa,
All Glenbervie School whānau are invited to join us for our first pōhiri of the year.
Rāapa te whā o Huitānguru
(Wednesday 4th February)
8:45am
We look forward to welcoming new tauira and their whānau to our Glenbervie School community.
A pōhiri is a traditional Māori ceremony whereby the tāngata whenua (local people) welcome manuhiri (visitors) to our school. This process starts with a karanga (call). During this karanga, manuhiri are led from the waharoa onto the top court, where they are welcomed with a haka then a karakia. Whaikōrero (speech) are made by school staff and tamariki, followed by a waiata after each speaker. An invitation to reply to the welcome is then offered to our manuhiri. If manuhiri choose to reply, they can do so in either English or Māori. After all whaikōrero are delivered, our manuhiri will be invited to walk over to the tāngata whenua side, this is where manuhiri hongi (press noses) and harirū (greeting - how do you do?) the tāngata whenua. As a result of this tikanga, our manuhiri are recognised as 'friends' not 'foe' and cease being manuhiri, they now stand with and are tāngata whenua. They are now a part of Glenbervie School.
Our pōwhiri will conclude with kai (food) in the staffroom, which lifts the tāpu (sacredness) of the pōhiri.
Manuhiri attending the pōhiri are to meet outside the waharoa just before 8:45, where we will guide you through the ceremony, which usually takes approximately 20min. Tāngata whenua, Glenbervie School whānau and community, will meet up on the top court by 8:40am.
We look forward to seeing you all there.
Mauri ora,
Glenbervie School Staff,

Tēnā koutou katoa,
This email is to inform you about a decision made by the Glenbervie School Board of Trustees (BOT) regarding the current discussions in Aotearoa New Zealand about the removal of the legal requirement for schools to give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi).
Key Information
· Discussion: The removal of this legal requirement was discussed at our recent BOT meeting.
· Decision: The Board has determined it is appropriate for Glenbervie School to issue a letter expressing our stance, in line with many other schools across the country.

· Attached is the letter that will shortly be sent to Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Education Minister Erica Stanford.
