Glenbervie School has a close relationship with Pehiāweri Marae. There is a clear and shared understanding of Tikanga and Wairuatanga that leads the school in all it does.
Rōpū has been mildly active over the years but had a resurgence in 2008. It is founded on, and embraces the values of Manaakitanga, Rangatiratanga and Te Mahi Rēhia. Our rōpū expresses the values and beliefs of the school and its community through haka, waiata, kanikani, poi, and rākau.
Inspiration for the kapa haka comes from the children, the community, our past and our future. Without these elements, parts of our culture would die. We perform for the love of it and to keep our culture alive.
We are so fortunate to have our tutor Te Tuhimareikura Hopa take the reins over from his father, Joby Hopa. Joby has been with us since 2008 and is responsible for bringing his passion and knowledge to our kapa haka rōpū. His son Te Tuhimareikura performed in those early years at Glenbervie School as a student and continues to perform with Hātea at Matatini and around the motu as well as inspiring a whole new generation of Glenbervie tauira.
We currently practice on Friday at 9:15am for an hour and there is nothing nicer than hearing waiata floating around the school grounds each week. Feel free to pop in if you need some wairua recharged.
