Bring Your Own Device - BYOD

In Year 5/6, we allow students to bring a Chromebook to school in order to support their learning. We currently have access to devices in all of our senior classes as a 1:3 ratio.

If you are wanting your child to bring their own device (Chromebook) to school, please read through a copy of our B.Y.O.D policy and check in with your child's teacher.

Connected Classroom User Agreement

CC Agreement for the Use of personal digital technology at Glenbervie School
As new technologies continue to change the world in which we live, they also provide many new and positive educational benefits for classroom instruction. To encourage this growth, students in Year 3-6 at Glenbervie School may now bring their own technology to school.

DEFINITIONS:

Important terms used in this document:

  • Cyber Safety Policy refers to creating a safe learning environment while maximising the educational benefits of existing and developing communication technologies.
  • School Network refers to the school’s computer network, Internet access facilities, computers, and other school ICT equipment/devices as outlined below.
  • Responsible Use Agreement refers to the school wide document that encourages students to be good digital citizens’ and is in line with the boards ‘Responsible Use Policy’.
  • Inappropriate in this agreement means material that deals with matters seen by the Principal and staff at Glenbervie School  to be against the values of Glenbervie School or the benefit to teaching and learning.

Technology/Devices

For purposes of CC, ‘Technology/Devices’ means a privately owned Chromebook that can be used for word processing, wireless Internet access, image capture/recording, sound recording and information transmitting/receiving/storing, etc.

Internet

Only the internet gateway provided by the school may be accessed while at school. Personal internet connective devices such as but not limited to 3G tablets / cell network adapters,  t-stick, modem, etc, are not permitted to be used to access outside internet sources at any time.

Security and Damages

Responsibility to keep the device secure rests with the individual owner. The Glenbervie School System, nor its staff or employees, are liable for any device stolen or damaged at school. If a device is stolen or damaged, it will be handled through normal channels of investigation similar to other personal artefacts that are impacted in similar situations. It is recommended that skins (decals) and other custom touches are used to physically identify your device from others. Additionally, protective cases for technology are encouraged. Glenbervie School will have specific spaces available for devices to be stored within the classroom when needed. No device is to remain in school bags.

The use of technology to provide educational opportunities is not a necessity but a privilege. A student does not have the right to use his or her laptop, or tablet while at school. When abused, privileges will be taken away. When respected, they will benefit from the learning environment as a whole. Students and parents/guardians participating in CC must adhere to the Student Code of Conduct, the ‘Responsible Use Agreement’, as well as all Board policies particularly the ‘Cyber Safety’ Policy.

Additionally, technology:

Must be in silent mode while at school
Is not to be used while on school buses.
May only be used to access apps, files on computer or internet sites which are relevant to the classroom curriculum. Gaming, social media and online chat, unless specifically associated with a learning outcome, are not permitted at school.
Will not be used outside learning times while at school (e.g. Before school, morning tea, lunchtime and after school)
Only has applications that are suitable and appropriate for the school environment.

Students acknowledge that:

All devices brought to school are their responsibility.

  • They will adhere to the school rules and guidelines of safe internet use while they are at school.
  • Bringing on premises or infecting the network with a Virus, Trojan, or programme designed to damage, alter, destroy, or provide access to unauthorised data or information is in violation of the Responsible Use Agreement.
  • Processing or accessing information on school property deemed inappropriate or related to “hacking”, altering, or bypassing network security policies is in violation of the Responsible Use Agreement.
  • Devices brought to school are for their use only.  Co-operative work in group situations may occur, but the owner will remain in charge of the device at all times.
  • The school has the right to inspect files on any device brought to Glenbervie School irrespective of if it has been the cause of a problem/ attack / virus.  This includes devices that may contain inappropriate material obtained offsite and stored on the student owned device.
  • The school may examine or collect a device if there is reasonable belief that a student has been using the device inappropriately.  Parents will be notified on the day.
  • It is the owner’s responsibility for the repair of any malfunctioning / damaged devices. Glenbervie School does not supply technical services for student owned devices.
  • Personal technology is charged prior to bringing it to school and runs off its own battery while at school.
  • To ensure appropriate network filters, students will only use the BYOD wireless connection in school, and will not attempt to bypass the network restrictions by using external networking facilities such as 3G/4G.
  • Devices are only to be used under adult direction for educational purposes only and not during break times.
  • Applications (apps) for BYOD devices will be loaded at home.  Applications are not to be installed via the school network.

As a student I understand and will abide by the above guidelines.  I further understand that any violation of the above may result in the loss of my network and/or device privileges as well as other disciplinary action.

As a parent I understand that my child will be responsible for abiding by the above guidelines.  I have read and discussed them with her/him and they understand the responsibility they have in the use of their personal devices.
