There are a number of Environmental Education initiatives at Glenbervie School. We work with Ecosolutions to run a Pollution Solution group. This group initiates ways to reduce the amount of pollution the school produces. They are responsible for monitoring and emptying the worm farm bins and collecting soft plastic rubbish. The group also helps to educate the rest of the school to be responsible with their rubbish.
Hut Building & Predator Free Group
A team of Senior School students actively participate in the Hut Building & Predator Free Group, meeting weekly to engage in hands-on conservation and environmental stewardship activities. Their efforts include maintaining and enhancing the hut building area, such as removing invasive species like Taiwan Cherry, repairing stone retaining walls, and replanting native tree species.
In alignment with New Zealand's Predator Free 2050 initiative, students are also involved in predator control measures. They are rostered to set and check rat traps within the hut building area, contributing to the protection of native wildlife. This practical experience not only supports local biodiversity but also instills a sense of responsibility and connection to the environment.
Participation in this group fosters teamwork, leadership, and a deep appreciation for nature. Students develop pride in their contributions to the school and the broader community, embodying the values of kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and environmental care.
Garden to Table - Our Garden to Table programme offers students a hands-on opportunity to explore the journey of food from seed to plate. Each week, students engage in activities such as preparing the vegetable garden for planting, sowing seeds and seedlings, and learning about soil health and the vital role of the soil microbiome.
Through these experiences, students gain a deeper understanding of where their food comes from and develop an appreciation for the effort involved in growing it. Working collaboratively, they cultivate teamwork skills and support one another in the gardening process.
In the kitchen, students learn to prepare and cook delicious meals using the fruits and vegetables harvested from the garden and the school orchard. This not only enhances their culinary skills but also reinforces the connection between gardening and healthy eating.
